Hunting for morels is Tom Nauman’s usual outdoor activity in the spring. He shares his interest with many turkey hunters and other folks who carry baskets and bug repellent into the woods to find mushrooms.

Mr. Nauman is the owner of Morel Mania Inc., a company that sells mushroom books, collecting bags, walking staffs, and other mushroom-themed merchandise. He has been featured in the New York Times, Outdoor Illinois Magazine, and is the founder of The Illinois State Morel Mushroom Hunting Championship.

Finding morels is not that difficult, but there are a few tricks to it. Identifying other edible fungi is more of a challenge.

Tom works at Morel Mania full time. He is a self taught naturalist who knows not only where to find fungi, but how to tell the edible from the dangerous. He warns that many people are allergic to some kinds of fungi and that none should be eaten without absolute assurance that they are safe. Even then, it is best to eat only a small amount in case there is an allergy. Be sure to hear what he has to say at the Expo.

Fortunately, morels are hard to confuse with anything else. They are also among the most delicious of all fungi. “Finding morels in the woods in the spring is great fun,” says Tom Nauman. Morel hunting is a perennial adventure to be enjoyed with anyone who has the mania.
